Iraqi Authorities Share Photos Of Munition Used In Recent Attack On Prime Minister House

On November 7, Iraqi authorities shared photos showing one of the munitions used in the assassination attempt of Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.

The unexploded munition was found in the morning on the rooftop of al-Kadhimi’s house in the highly-fortified Green Zone in the capital Baghdad. Iraqi explosive experts moved the munition to a safe area where it was destroyed in a controlled explosion.

The Iraqi Ministry of Interior said that three drones were used in the assassination attempt that took place in the early morning hours. Two drones were shot down before they could reach the PM house. The third, however, managed to attack its target. Al-Kadhimi was not present in the house at the time.

The design of the munition found on the rooftop of al-Kadhimi’s house appears to be identical to a munition that was loaded on a drone that attacked the US embassy in Baghdad last July.

This confirms that armed drones were used in the assassination attempt. The origin of the large quadcopter drone remains, however, unclear.

Some reports blamed Iranian-backed parties for the attack, as it came amid protests in Baghdad over the result of a general election which saw Iran’s closest allies losing many parliamentary seats. Three people, all supporters of Iranian-backed parties, were shot and killed while taking part in the protests.

Iranian-backed parties pushed back against these accusations, claiming that the attempt on al-Kadhimi’s life was either a propaganda stunt or a provocation by a third party.

The attack was not likely meant to kill or wound al-Kadhimi. It may have been a message to the PM, who is well-known for his pro-US views.
