Late on February 1, a drone attack targeted a key base of the United States military at the al-Omar oil field in the eastern Syria governorate of Deir Ezzor.
Lebanon’s Al-Mayadeen TV, which is close to the Iran-led Axis of Resistance, reported that at least three suicide drones had struck the base, known as the Green Village.
This was later confirmed by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The London-based monitoring group said that there were no casualties, but noted that the U.S. military dispatched reinforcements to the base after the attack.
The attack came just five days after a suicide drone struck Tower 22, a U.S. military base on the Syrian-Jordanian border, killing three troops and wounding dozens others. The attack was reportedly carried out by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iranian-backed armed factions.
The IRI claimed responsibility for the majority of more than 165 attacks that have targeted U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria since October 17 on the backdrop of the Israeli war on the Palestinian Gaza Strip.
Following the deadly attack on Tower 22, Kataib Hezbollah, which is believed to be a key faction of the IRI, announced a pause in operations against U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria without providing any clear reason.
While some observers thought that Kataib Hezbollah’s decision represents the general stance of the IRI, other factions of the group, including Ashab al-Kahf and Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba, said on February 2 that operations against U.S. forces will continue.
The attack on the Green Village base was most likely carried out by the IRI. It shows that Iranian-backed forces in Iraq and Syria are determined to go on with their military campaign against the U.S., even after threats of a serious retaliation by Washington.
