The Iraqi army and volunteer forces have launched a full-scale offensive against ISIS near the terrorist group’s last major stronghold, Mosul.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the operation in a televised address on September 20 in New York. Al-Abadi said the Iraqi forces have launched operations to liberate Shirqat 100 km south of Mosul in the province of Nineveh and two other areas in the province of Anbar.

“We announce the start of operations to liberate al-Shirqat, Jazirat al-Ramadi and Jazirat Heet, with the efforts of our brave forces,” the Iraqi prime minister wrote in Twitter.

Shirqat is the town located near the road from Baghdad to Mosul. Jazirat Ramadi and Jazirat Heet are located along the Euphrates River.

The Iraqi forces have already seized a number of villages sine the start of the advance.
