Maj. Gen. Yehia Rasool, a spokesman for the Iraqi Commander-in-Chief, announced on July 16, that the Iraqi National Intelligence Service had killed ISIS’ Baghdad governor, Omar Shallal Ubaid al-Kartani, in a special operation.

In an official statement, Maj. Gen. Rasool revealed that a-Kartani’s media hand Laith Jamal, aka “Abu al-Bara’a,” and his deputy, Qital al-Muhajir, had been both killed in the same operation.

Al-Kartani replaced ISIS’ former Baghdad governor, Ahmad Issa, aka “Abu Talha,” who had been killed in a previous operation by Iraqi government forces.

ISIS cells are fairly active around Baghdad. Nevertheless, the terrorist group’s activities in the city itself are very limited. No major attacks have been reported in the past few years. Government forces constantly keep the capital under very tight control.

While the killing of al-Kartani is a major blow to ISIS remnants in Iraq, it does not mean the end of the group’s presence in Baghdad. ISIS cells remain a real threat in Baghdad as well as in other parts of the country.
