On July 22, the Iraqi official Security Media Cell announced that the military intelligence directorate had uncovered an armored vehicle-borne improvised device (VBIED) in the northern province of Nineveh .
In a statement, the cell said that the VBIED was uncovered at the village of Sahel Abbas in the Mohalabiya district by the 11th and 15th divisions of the intelligence service.
Four containers each filled with 20 liters of explosives were found installed in the heavily armored VBIED, which was also armed with three anti-tank rocket-propelled grenades in the front, likely for use to breach fortifications or to bypass checkpoints during an attack.
After a careful inspection, the VBIED was destroyed in a controlled explosion by Iraqi military engineers in a remote desert area.
The armored VBIED was most likely prepared by ISIS remaining cells in Nineveh for use in a future terrorist attack. The terrorist group pioneered the use of such vehicles in large-scale raids after its rise in Iraq and Syria more than nine years ago.
Iraq announced the defeat of ISIS in 2017. However, the group continues to wage an insurgency, mainly in the country’s western, northern and eastern region.
