Iraqi Military Successfully Uses Russian Kornet Antitank Missile Systems

Iraqi military have convinced of high efficiency of the Kornet anti-tank weapons system during hostilities near Mosul, the Wall Street Journal newspaper reported. According to the article, Iraqi soldiers successfully use the Russian anti-tank weapons systems against explosive-packed cars and trucks, driven by suicide bombers.

As the newspaper noted, Iraqi military commanders say that there are many weapons that are capable to “disable vehicle bombs, but only the Kornet, which can penetrate 3 feet of metal, can stop an armored vehicle bomb.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, Iraqi military often mounts this anti-tank weapons system atop the American-made Humvee. The Kornet is also used for shelling buildings, where terrorists are.

The author of the article also noted that the Kornets have been in service of the Iraqi Armed Forces for more than ten years, and these systems were effectively used against American armored vehicles during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

He also pointed out that the usage of the Kornet missiles helped to “clear the way for the Iraqi army’s advance on Mosul” – only for the first week of the military operation, more than 120 bomb-laden vehicles of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group were destroyed with these anti-tank systems.

The operation to liberate Mosul was started on October 17. According to the US Department of Defense, up to 6,000 terrorists could be concentrated in the city.
