On February 24, several airstrikes by the Iraqi Air Force (IQAF) targeted a hideout of ISIS terrorists in the area of Hawi al-Uzym in the northern Iraqi province of Saladin.
The IQAF released footage of the pinpoint airstrikes, which were carried out by F-16IQ fighter jets armed with 227-kg GBU-12 Paveway II laser-guided bombs.
A day after the strikes, the Iraqi military dispatched a unit from the Salah al-Din Commando Brigade to conduct a search operation in Hawi al-Uzym. The dead bodies of five terrorists and destroyed military equipment were found among the remains of the targeted hideout, according to the Iraqi Security Media Cell.
The IQAF supported several counter-terrorism operations this month. On February 12, ISIS Wali [governor] in the eastern province of Diyala was killed along with six other terrorists in a series of airstrikes. Later on February 17, three terrorists were killed when airstrikes hit a hideout of ISIS in the Hamrin mountain chain in the northern province of Kirkuk.
Over the last year, the IQAF demonstrated its ability to operate independently, without any support from the United States-led coalition.
Despite the efforts being made by the air force and other branches of the Iraqi military, ISIS insurgency in the country could go on for years. The terrorist group’s influence in the western, northern and eastern regions is still strong.
