The Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) have held the U.S. and Israel responsible for the recent explosions at their ammo depots.
In an official statement, the PMU’s deputy leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis revealed that the U.S. deployed four Israeli unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in Iraq. The UAVs were reportedly transported through Azerbaijan.
Al-Muhandis said that the four UAVs and others of the U.S. have been collecting info on the PMU and its commanders. He also noted that the PMU has extensive details on U.S. aerial activity over Iraq, warning that there will be a response to any new attack.
“We announce that the first and last entity responsible for what happened are the American forces, and we will hold them responsible for whatever happens from today onwards, we have no other choice but to defend ourselves and our bases with the weapons we already have and with the use of even more advanced weapons,” al-Muhandis said in the statement, which was released in the afternoon of August 21.
The deputy leader added that the PMU had informed the Iraqi military that its units will target any warplane that would fly over any of its position without the permission of the country’s federal government.
In its first response to the PMU’s accusation, the U.S. led coalition said in a statement: “The mission of CJTF-OIR [Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve] in Iraq is solely to enable our Iraqi Security Force partners in the mission of an enduring defeat of Daesh [ISIS]. We operate in Iraq at the invitation of the Government of Iraq and comply with their laws and direction.”
A day earlier, a mysterious explosion rocked a key position of the PMU al-Muhandis the Balad air base north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
Al-Muhandis’ statement includes a clear threat to Israel as well as U.S. forces deployed in Iraq, which could lead to a major escalation in the Middle Eastern country.
