Iraqi PMU Withdrew Its Forces Form Syria’s Al-Bukamal – Report

Iranian-backed forces massing around Deir Ezzor city

The Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) have withdrawn their units from the strategic city of al-Bukamal in the eastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor, Syria’s al-Watan newspaper reported on June 29.

“Personnel of the Iraqi PMU, which are fighting terrorism along the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), evacuated a position near the school of Ali bin Abi Talib in the city of al-Bukamal and headed towards the area of al-Harri on the Syrian-Iraqi border,” the newspaper, which is known for its close ties with the Damascus government, said in its report.

According to al-Watan, the PMU’s withdrawal from al-Bukamal was carried out in full coordination with the SAA, which took control of the abandoned positions.

Earlier this month, a tribal meeting was held in al-Bukamal to form local forces to protect the city and assist the SAA. During the meeting several tribal leaders stressed that the army’s allies should be replaced by local forces.

While the success of the meeting was likely one of the reasons behind the PMU’s surprising withdrawal, other regional factors can’t be ruled out.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) revealed a day after the release of al-Watan’s report that Lebanese Hezbollah is also withdrawing from positions around the Syrian capital, Damascus, and in the southern region of the country.

The withdrawal of these forces, if confirmed, could be a sign of a near understanding between Damascus and its allies on one side and the U.S. on the other. Washington has been calling on Iranian-backed forces to withdraw from Syria for several years now. In some cases, a partial withdrawal of Iranian-backed forces may become a part of wider deal to settle the conflict.

It looks like the US is talking about declaring victory and leaving again:

“Netanyahu said … “The two superpowers, together with Israel, agree that we must aspire to the goal in which all foreign forces that have entered Syria since 2011 leave Syria.”

massice attack by Israel on damascus

RichardD

What do you think that the chances of that happening are?

dutchnational

Israel does not consider itself as foreign.

RichardD

Your comment doesn’t make sense.

dutchnational

You mention Israel wanting all foreign military gone from Syria. As they do not consider themselves to be foreign, they mean all foreign troops except their own.

RichardD

Are you referring to the Golan squatters?

dutchnational

I mean their formal annexation of the region in 1981.

RichardD

The one done without a referendum after 2 hostile military invasions recognized by only their anti American swamp traitors. And condemned by everyone to 2 at the UN.

That can be addressed by a regional resolution implementation force to supervise refugee repatriation and a referendum dejudifying and unifying Palestinian for admission to the UN in replacement of Israel.

RichardD

The statement was referring to forces in Syria after 2015.

RichardD

The IDF needs to withdraw from Palestine so that it can be admitted unified as a Jew free member of the UN to replace Israel.

Jens Holm

Wrong site again. You are wrong. Actually there is a site about Israel but not about Palestone.

igybundy

There is history about Palestine going back many thousands of years.. Nothing about Israel until 50 or so years ago.

dutchnational

Palestinians as an arab speaking group only exist from after the crusaders. They consist of a combination of islamised arameans, islamised samaritans and conquering arabs from outside. The christian palestinians, one could say have a link to pre arab times, have been driven out by muslim palestinians, going from 25% in ottoman time to 5% or less at present, with part of the remainder reverting to non arab Syriac status.

Jens Holm

I do believe, but see it as a smaller incident.

Jens Holm

I see that as a random small one. Isnt he helper for food and supply for refugees or something.

Bill Wilson

From what I’ve read earlier, the Iraqi Shia PMUs literally ran off the SAA garrisons so they could take over the distribution of relief supplies to the civilians in order to win their support for Iran. The local Sunni tribes weren’t happy about that so began bitching at Damascus to get rid of them.

Iran is our last best Hope.

Jens Holm

If Ypu say so. As for Iraq, I think the sword has 2 sides.

Rhodium 10

Iraqi PMU are operating in Syria..they moved its forces near Al Tanf and they killed many ISIS members accord al masdar web..

Jens Holm

Thats tight. They have or had their problems there too in several big areas.

The biggest joke is, that Assad tell they cover the Al Tanf-Abu Kamal line(with Iraqians) .

Xoli Xoli

No wonder everybody is withdrawing because you cant trust Putin.

Brother Ma

I hope to God Russia knows what it is doing.Leaving Syria partitioned is not a victory.

Sinbad2

It is for Russia. All wars are about money.

Brother Ma

Worrying given we hear the Hezbollah is out as well.

dutchnational

There is another explanation possible. Iran now lavks the funds to pay the PMU, Hezbollah and the Afghans. SAA has not transferred any forces towards Al Bukamal and NDF is worthless.

As for tribal forces, those are beyond worthless as they lack training, discipline, good command. Last time SAA used them, to go for DEZ, they failed horribly and many fleeing towards SDF and protection against IS. Last time SDF used them, Elite forces against Raqqah, they broke, deserted advance SDF lines to IS. SDF dissolved most, retrained them as SDF and shunned the remainder incl its command. Only Sanaadid forces and MMC proved battle reliable.

Soon those tribal forces will be cut off from main Syria by IS pockets in the Badiya. As soon as Mayadin and Al Bukamal will be retaken by IS, SDF will have to step in. In self defense as the river is too easy to cross.

Icarus Tanović

Oh, okay this info is per SOHR! Hahaha, it is beyond laughable.

Icarus Tanović

News flash: Iraqis aren’t withdrawing from Al Bukamal! Another one of SOHR lies.

Willing Conscience (The Truths

The PMU are mostly Shia Muslims that were fighting Isis in Syria, but now Isis is virtually obsolete in this region they’re no longer needed here, and since nearly half the people they’re protecting are Sunni Muslims which don’t really want them here anyway [and no longer need them], it’s probably a good idea to move them to somewhere they are needed, and also more appreciated.
