The Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), a coalition of Iranian-backed armed faction, said on December 2 that it had targeted a base of the United States military near Erbil Insertional Airport in the northern Iraqi autonomous region with a suicide drone.
Video footage released by the IRI showed the release of what appears to be an Iranian-made Ababil-2 suicide drone. There were no reports of casualties or material losses.
The IRI said in a statement that the attack was carried out in response to the “crimes” committed by Israel against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
The attack was the first to be officially announced by the IRI since the temporary ceasefire in Gaza came to an end on December 1.
The IRI began launching attacks against U.S. bases in Iraq and neighboring Syria on October 17, ten days into the war in Gaza. After the start of the temporary ceasefire in the Strip on November 24, the IRI announced what it called a “reduction” in attacks.
A rocket attack targeted the U.S. base at the Conoco gas plant in the eastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor on November 29, amid the ceasefire. Another hit al-Shaddadi base in the northeastern Syria governorate of al-Hasakah just a few hours after the ceasefire ended on December 1. However, the IRI did not claim either attack.
The U.S. has so far reported more than 70 attacks on its forces in Iraq and Syria. More than 50 troops were lightly wounded. Despite this, Washington continues to provide unconditional support for the Israeli war in Gaza.
The U.S. responded over the last month with several strikes against targets in Syria and Iraq. At least nine Iraqi fighters were killed. However, the IRI remains undeterred as demonstrated by its last attack.
