The Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iran-backed armed factions, announced on October 5 that it had attacked five targets in Israel in support of the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
In two separate statements, the group said it launched three suicide drones at three “vital targets” in northern Israel and attacked two more targets, one in the outskirts of the northern city of Haifa and another in southern Israel, with cruise missiles.
The attacks were carried out “in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity [Israel] against civilians, including children, women, and the elderly” in Gaza and Lebanon, the group added, vowing that “operations against enemy strongholds will continue at an increasing pace.”
Two videos released by the group showed the launch of what appears to be three Iranian-made KAS-04 suicide drones and at least two Araqab cruise missiles. The Araqab is thought to be a derivative of the Iranian-made Paveh.
On October 6, the Israeli Defense Forces said that two drones were shot down by an Israeli Navy missile boat off the coast of northern Israel and a third one was shot down by the Israeli Air Force off the coast of the central city of Tel Aviv. Video footage showing twp of the interceptions was released.
The military said that the three drones were launched from the east, a term used to describe IRI attacks from Iraq in the past.
The IRI began carrying out attacks against Israel as well as against United States forces in Iraq and neighboring Syria last October in response to the Israeli war on Gaza. In September, the group escalated its attacks against Israel in response to Israel’s ongoing aerial campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
On October 3, two Israeli troops were killed and at least 24 others were wounded when a base in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights was struck by a drone launched from Iraq by the IRI.
While Israel has not openly responded to the IRI’s attacks yet, it was blamed for several strikes that targeted Iran-backed armed factions along the Syrian-Iraqi border and near the Syrian capital, Damascus, after the start of the war in the Strip. Iraqi fighters and commanders were killed in some of these strikes.
