Late on October 8, an indirect fire attack targeted a large base of the Turkish military near the town of Zaylkan in Bashiqa district in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh.
Three 122 mm Grad rockets reportedly landed in the vicinity of the base. The Directorate General of Counter Terrorism in the Kurdistan Region said in a statement that the attack didn’t cause any casualties or material losses.
A faction calling itself the Islamic Resistance – Iraq Ahrar Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack. In a brief statement, the pro-Iranian faction said that the attack was a response to the “criminal practices” of the Turkish military in Iraq.
“Our strikes will not stop until the last occupying soldier leaves our land,” the group said.
Zaylkan base, which was established back in 2014, hosts some 4,000 Turkish troops. The Iraqi government have repeatedly asked Ankara to withdraw from the large base, which was built without its official approval.
In July, the same shadowy faction attacked Zaylkan base in response to a series of Turkish strikes on the district of Zakho in Duhok province of the Kurdistan Region. The strikes, which targeted a number of tourist resorts, claimed the lives of nine civilians.
The new attack was likely a payback for a series of Turkish airstrikes that targeted positions and personnel of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party in different parts of Kurdistan between October 4 and 6.
