The Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iran-backed armed factions, launched on June 8 another drone attack against Israel.
The attack targeted a “vital target” in Israel, the group said in a statement without elaborating. However, the faction that carried out the attack, Saraya Awliya al-Dam, revealed in a separate statement that it had launched two drones at the Orot Rabin Power Plant near the northern Israeli town of Caesarea during the attack.
Video footage released by Saraya Awliya al-Dam showed masked fighters praying in an underground bunker decorated with the photos of living and dead commanders of the so-called Axis of Resistance before launching what appears to be two Iranian-made Shahed-101 suicide drones at Israel.
The drone attack was carried out in response to Israel’s “massacres” against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, the IRI noted in its statement.
From its side, Saraya Awliya al-Dam specified in its statement that the attack was carried out in retaliation to ongoing Israeli ground operations in the southern Gaza area of Rafah.
Hebrew media didn’t report any warnings or interceptions in Israel due to attacks from Iraq. Nevertheless, this does not mean that the attack was a failure as the Israeli military has the power to censor all news related to security incidents in the country.
The IRI began launching attacks against Israel as well as against United States forces in Iraq and neighboring Syria on October 17 in response to the Israeli war on Gaza -which broke out just ten days earlier- and Washington’s unwavering support for it.
The group suspended attacks against U.S. forces last February after the death of three American troops in a drone strike on a base in Jordan, reportedly upon a request from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. However, it escalated attacks against Israel starting from March.
Israel has not openly responded to the IRI’s attacks yet. Nevertheless, it was blamed for several strikes that targeted Iran-backed armed factions along the Syrian-Iraqi border and near the Syrian capital, Damascus, after the start of the war in Gaza. Iraqi fighters were killed in some of these strikes.
