The Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iranian-backed armed factions, has attacked three bases hosting United States forces in Iraq and Syria as well as a key port in Israel in response to the war on the Palestinian Gaza Strip.
In a statement released on January 24, the group said that it launched rockets and drones at two base in Iraq, al-Asad Air Base in the western province of al-Anbar and Erbil International Airport in the northern autonomous region of Kurdistan, as well as at a base in Syria, the Conoco gas plant in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor.
The group also released video footage showing the launch of what appears to be an Iranian-made Shahed-101 suicide drone at al-Asad Air Base.
Five U.S. troops were lightly wounded in the attack on al-Asad Air Base, according to Iraqi security officials. Iraqi media also confirmed that Erbil International Airport was Hit. In addition, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that several rockets impacted the Conoco base.
On January 25, the IRI announced in a second statement that it had attacked the port of Ashdod in southern Israel with drones. the group released video footage showing the launch of an unidentified drone.
The Israeli military reported that two suicide drones that came from the direction of Lebanon impacted open areas in the north of the country. However, it is still unclear if these were the drones launched by the IRI, or another attack carried out by Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
The recent attacks were carried out in response to recent Israeli “crimes” against Palestinains in Gaza, the IRI noted in its statements.
It’s worth noting that the United States Central Command carried out strikes early on January 24 against three facilities used by Iranian-backed Kataib Hezbollah, which is said to be a key faction of the IRI. The strikes killed an Iraqi fighter and wounded two others.
U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria have come under attack at least 151 times since October 17 -ten days after the outbreak of the Israeli war on Gaza-, according to U.S. defense officials. The IRI claimed responsibility for most of the attacks.
The group also carried out several attacks against Israel, launching drones and missiles at targets from the north to the south of the country as well as off its shores.
