Iraqi ‘Resistance’ Attacks U.S. Garrison, Nearby Base In Syria’s Al-Tanf

Late on December 13, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iranian-backed armed factions, announced that it had attacked a garrison and a base of the United States military in the southeastern Syrian area of al-Tanf.

In a statement, the IRI said that the two positions were targeted with suicide drones in response to Israeli “crimes” against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The U.S. military has not yet commented on the IRI’s announcement. However, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that al-Tanf was attacked with drones.

The London-based monitoring group also reported rocket and drone attacks on U.S. bases in the Conoco gas plant in the eastern governorate of Deir Ezzor and al-Shaddadi town in the northeastern governorate of al-Hasakah early on December 14. The IRI has not claimed responsibility for either attacks.

The attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria began on October 17 in response to the Israeli war on Gaza, which broke out ten days earlier. Most of the attacks have been claimed by IRI.

The U.S. military has already launched several retaliatory strikes against IRI targets in Syria and Iraq. However, the group remains undeterred.

The repeated attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq and Syria are meant to pressure Washington into reconsidering its unconditional political and military support for the Israeli war on Gaza, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 18,000 Palestinians.
