The Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iran-backed armed factions, escalated its attacks against Israel on September 25, launching missile and drone strikes against four targets of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
In separate statements, the group said it struck a target in the Jordan Valley, two in northern Israel and another in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
The attacks were carried out “in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity [Israel] against civilians, including children, women, and the elderly” in the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, the group said, vowing that “operations against enemy strongholds will continue at an increasing pace.”
Videos released by the group showed the launch an Arqab cruise missile, a derivative of the Iranian-made Paveh, and several Shahed-101 suicide drones, which are also alleged to be made by Iran.
The IDF admitted that several drones entered Israeli airspace from the eastern direction, with one impacting the Arava desert and two others hitting the Golan Heights. It also alleged that another drone was intercepted over the Sea of Galilee by its fighter jets.
While the military didn’t provide any details on the losses, Hebrew media reported a fire in Ramon Air Base and the Golan Heights. Later a video allegedly showing damage at the air base surfaced online.
The IRI began carrying out attacks against Israel as well as against United States forces in Iraq and neighboring Syria last October in response to the Israeli war on Gaza. Since then, the group has launched dozens of attacks against Israel using suicide drones and cruise missiles
Israel has not openly responded to the IRI’s attacks yet. However, it was blamed for several strikes that targeted Iran-backed armed factions along the Syrian-Iraqi border and near the Syrian capital, Damascus, after the start of the war in the Strip. Iraqi fighters and commanders were killed in some of these strikes.
The latest wave of attacks by the IRI appears to be a direct response to the recent Israeli escalation against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
