The Islamic Resistance In Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iranian-backed factions, launched on May 14 another attack against the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat using what appears to be Iranian-made Shahed-131 suicide drones for the first time.
The attack targeted a military site in Eilat, according to the group, which released video footage showing the launch of two drones from an unspecified desert area.
The Shahed-131 has a range of 900 kilometers, which is more than enough to reach Eilat from Iraq. The suicide drone is typically armed with a warhead weighting at least 15 kilograms. This was the first time this type of suicide drones was spotted with the IRI.
The attack was carried out in response to Israel’s “massacres” against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, the IRI said in a brief statement.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced later that its fighter jets shot down two drones which were headed for Israel from the east. No other details were given. There were no reports of any blasts or interceptions over Eilat or in nearby areas.
This was the IRI’s second attack against Israel in less than 24 hours. Early on May 13, the group said it struck a “vital target” in Eilat using two Al-Arfad suicide drones. Video footage released by the group indicates that Al-Arfad is a version of an Iranian-made type codenamed by the United States military and intelligence as KAS-04. Not much else is known about this type of suicide drones.
On the same day, the IDF said that a drone heading toward Israel from the eastern direction was intercepted by a fighter jet. According to the military, the drone did not enter Israeli airspace, and therefore sirens did not sound.
The IRI began launching attacks against Israel as well as against United States forces in Iraq and neighboring Syria on October 17 in response to the Israeli war on Gaza -which broke out just ten days earlier- and Washington’s unwavering support for it.
The group suspended attacks against U.S. forces last February after the death of three American troops in a drone strike on a base in Jordan, reportedly upon a request from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Nevertheless, it escalated attacks against Israel starting from March.
The group launched 16 attacks against Israel in March and at least 22 more during April. So far this month, five attacks have been announced.
Israel has not openly responded to the IRI’s attacks yet. Nevertheless, it was blamed for several attacks that targeted Iranian-backed armed factions along the Syrian-Iraqi border and near the Syrian capital, Damascus, after the start of the war in Gaza.
