The Islamic Resistance in Iraq – ‘Ashab al-Kahf (AK) – announced late on July 24 that its fighters had shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) of the U.S. military over the northern Iraqi province of Saladin.
“We confirm the downing of a U.S. military UAV that took off from one of the military bases in the region to carry out a reconnaissance and spying sortie in Iraq, and specifically in the airspace of Saladin,” a statement by the group reads.
AK said that the UAV was shot down with some ‘new weapon’. The group vowed that that the drone won’t be the last to be shot down by its fighters.
The group shared two photos of the incident. One of the photo shows the launch of what appears to be an anti-aircraft missile, likely a man-portable air-defense system. The other shows the alleged crash site of the downed drone.

An Iraqi security source confirmed to the Alsumaria TV that drone crashed in Tell al-Jawad near the district of Seneia in Saladin on July 24. The source, however, was not able to determine if the drone was American or Iraqi.
Last month, AK fighters shot down a U.S. military UAV over the western province of al-Anbar. A second drone targeted and killed two local farmers who attempted to recover the wreckage of the downed drone.
AK, which emerged in August of 2019, has been stepping up its attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq. The group and many other pro-Iran factions vowed to push American troops out of the country after the assassination of Popular Mobilization Units Deputy-Commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and Iran’s Quds Force Commander Maj. Gen. Qassim Soleimani earlier this year.
