Iraqi security forces have neutralized a dangerous cell of ISIS in Badush district in the northern province of Nineveh, the official Security Media Cell announced on November 5.
The cell was hiding in a 15-meter long tunnel that was uncovered by the Federal Intelligence and Investigation Agency. Upon direct orders from the Iraqi Interior Minister, Othman al-Ghanimi, a joint force of the police, intelligence and military raided the underground hideout.
Iraqi government force clashed with the cell’s members during the raid, killing three of them. One of the slain terrorists was ISIS field commander in Badush.
Explosive belts and light weapons were found at the tunnel, which was destroyed by Iraqi military engineers at the end of the raid.
Iraq stepped up its operations against ISIS cells in the northern region in the last few months. On October 7, the Iraqi military announced that it had eliminated a senior commander of the terrorist group in the province of Kirkuk. The commander was killed along with two of his guards in Wadi Zaghaytun as a result of a pinpoint airstrike that was carried out by the Iraqi Air Force.
Despite sustaining some serious human and material losses, ISIS cells continue to operate in northern, western and eastern Iraq. The terrorist group’s insurgency in the war-torn country will not likely end in the near future.
