On September 21, the Iraqi Air Force (IQAF) and intelligence killed two terrorists of ISIS during a joint special operation in the northern province of Kirkuk.

The terrorists were taking shelter inside a hideout in Hamrin Mountains that was first destroyed by F-16 fighter jets of the IQAF.

Following the pinpoint airstrikes, a joint special operation force from the Iraqi National Intelligence Service and the Counter-Terrorism Service landed from helicopters near the hideout to conduct a search operation. The remains of the two slain terrorists and documents of ISIS were found in the rubble of the hideout.

Hamrin Mountains, which lays between Kirkuk and the eastern province of Diyala, are known to be infested with ISIS cells. From there, the terrorists launch attacks against Iraqi government forces on a regular basis.

Over the past week, ISIS’s official news agency, Amaq, reported two attacks against government forces in Kirkuk. On September 16, the group’s cells damaged a Humvee vehicle of the Federal Police in the district of Rashad with an improvised explosive device. Later on September 21, the terrorists attacked a military position in al-Dibs district. A soldier was allegedly killed as a result of the attack.

The Iraqi military, intelligence and security forces stepped up their counter-terrorism operations this year. Despite of this, ISIS insurgency in the country will not likely end any time soon.
