ISIS cells were “waging a war” on thermal surveillance cameras in Iraq, Abdel-Khaleq al-Azzawi, a member of the Security and Defense Committee in the Iraqi Parliament, told the IQ News on July 16.
The Iraqi MP revealed that more than 20 attacks and infiltrations by the terrorist group’s cells were foiled recently thanks to thermal surveillance cameras.
In response, the terrorists group began targeting thermal surveillance cameras, especially in the eastern province of Diyala, where such attacks were reported in seven to nine areas.
“The cameras have turned into a lethal weapon in the face of ISIS, to the extent that many villages have relied on themselves and bought cameras to protect themselves from surprise attacks,” al-Azzawi said.
According to al-Azzawi, ISIS cells took out 25 to 30 thermal surveillance cameras in the last few months. The terrorists have been targeting the cameras with sniper rifles. More than 40% of the attacks took place in Diyala.
“[Thermal surveillance] cameras have paralyzed ISIS in many areas, so they are being intensively targeted, especially in areas with a complex environment and where moving around has become very difficult because of the cameras,” the MP explained.
ISIS cells stepped up their attacks on Iraqi government and tribal forces in different parts of Diyala in the last few weeks.
The information revealed by al-Azzawi shows how new technology is posing a real challenge to ISIS terrorists, who has been attempting to rebuild their “Caliphate” in Iraq for some time now.
