On September 18, three pro-government fighters were killed when ISIS cells attacked a military patrol in Syria’s central region, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

The London-based monitoring group said that the attack took place on the M20 highway, between the towns of al-Sukhnah in the eastern Homs countryside and Kobajjep in the western countryside of Deir Ezzor.

Several other pro-government fighters who were wounded in the attack were taken to hospitals in Homs, the monitoring group said, adding that the terrorists managed to flee.

ISIS cells in central Syria stepped up their attacks this year. The SOHR has documented 116 attacks by the terrorist group in the region since January. The attacks claimed the lives of 264 service members and pro-government fighters as well as 160 civilians.

During the same period, at least 27 terrorists were killed in ground operations by government forces and Russian airstrikes.

The attack on the M20 highway shows that ISIS is still attempting to expand its influence in central Syria. The terrorist group remains a real threat to strategic routes and urban centers in the region. Its insurgency will not likely end in the near future.
