On January 8, ISIS cells in Syria’s central region took advantage of poor weather conditions and carried out an attack in the western countryside of Deir Ezzor.

The terrorists attacked a position of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) 17th Division in the desert area of al-Fayda. Heavy clashes broke out around the position between the terrorists and army troops, who eventually repelled the attack.

A service member of the SAA, Captain Mahmoud Ali Al-Zamam, was allegedly killed during the attack, while two others were wounded.

Just a day earlier, ISIS cells attacked several positions of the SAA in the outskirts of the village of Jedin in the southern Raqqa countryside. The terrorists also took advantage of poor weather conditions which forced the army to halt most of its operations. According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a service member was killed and four others were wounded in the attack.

ISIS cells in central Syria are apparently planning to escalate their attacks on government forces and civilians in the region this year.

The SAA and its allies will likely respond to the terrorist group’s recent attacks once the weather in the central region clears out. A new series of combing operations and airstrikes could help contain the threat posed by the group’s cells for the short term.
