ISIS Cells In Central Syria Strike Again As Army Prepares To Launch New Operation

ISIS cells in the central region of Syria continue to launch attacks against government forces despite facing some serious pressure.

On September 28, the terrorists targeted a vehicle of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) with an improvised explosive device as it was passing on a road leading to Tabqah Air Base in the southern countryside of Raqqa. ISIS’s official news agency, Amaq, said that the attack damaged the vehicle and wounded two soldiers.

The attack was the most recent in a series of small-scale operations by ISIS remaining cells in the southern countryside of Raqqa. Most of the terrorists’ recent operations took place near Tabqah Air Base.

Syrian activist revealed on September 30 that the SAA and its allies are preparing to launch a new large-scale combing operation in the central region. Despite of ISIS recent attacks in the southern Raqqa countryside, the operation will not take place there.

The operation will reportedly cover the outskirts of the towns of al-Sukhnah and Palmyra in the eastern Homs countryside as well as several desert areas in the southern countryside of Deir Ezzor.

The SAA’s elite 25th Special Mission Forces Division, commonly known as the Tiger Forces, will likely lead the new operation. The Russian Aerospace Forces, which have been very active over the central region, may provide air support for Syrian troops.

The recent operations in central Syria inflicted heavy human and material losses on ISIS cells. Still, the terrorist group’s insurgency in the region will not likely end this year.
