ISIS cells in Syria killed 105 people during the holy Islamic month of Ramadan that began on March 23 and ended on April 20, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The London-based pro-opposition monitoring group said in a report released on April 21 that ISIS carried out a total of 40 attacks in the past 30 days. 14 of the terrorist group’s attacks took place in areas held by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the country’s northeastern region. At least six were killed there.
The remaining 26 attacks were in government-held areas. The terrorist attacks claimed the lives of 99 people. Most of the attacks targeted civilians hunting for desert truffles in the central region.
One of the deadliest attacks took place in the eastern Homs countryside on February 17. Back then, at least 53 people who were collecting truffles near the town of al-Sukhnah were killed by suspected ISIS terrorists.
ISIS lost its last piece of territory in Syria in 2019. Nevertheless, the terrorist group is still waging an insurgency in the country.
The group’s cells are mainly active against Syrian government forces in the southern and central region as well as against the SDF in the northeastern region.
ISIS also maintains a large presence in areas held by the Turkish military and rebels in northern and northwestern Syria. However, its cells rarely carry out attacks there. Just last week, a senior commander of the group was killed in a U.S. helicopter raid in the northern region.
The political and social division in war-torn Syria is the main reason why ISIS is still active in the country. The terrorist group’s insurgency will likely continue until the crisis in the country is over.
