At the late hours of March 6, gunmen ambushed a convoy of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) on the road between the towns of Makhmur and al-Dibs, south of the city of Mosul.
According to Iraqi sources, the PMU fighters were on their way from Mosul to the Turkman Shiite town of Tuz Khurma when they were ambushed. Most of the fighters were reportedly unarmed in a bus.
The Lebanese al-Mayadeen TV reported that six fighters of the PMU’s 15th Brigade were killed and 31 others were injured in the attack, that lasted for a few minutes only.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. However, ISIS cells are known for carrying out such attacks on Iraqi government forces.
“This attack will not dissuade the PMU and security forces from chasing terrorism cells,” the PMU’s 15 Brigade said in an official statement.
This was the first such attack in the area of Makhmur since its liberation from ISIS in late 2017. The area is now witnessing a security operation by Iraqi government forces. The operation is aimed at neutralizing remaining ISIS cells.
Iraq, just like Syria need to wake up and realize that they will NEVER be rid of these guys
I wonder if this is where the US airlifted / dropped them (Syrian) ISIS off.
