Early on March 6, ISIS cells in central Syria took advantage of a heavy dust storm affecting the region and launched a large-scale attack on the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies.
The terrorists attacked several military positions in the outskirts of the village of al-Sawab. The village is located next to the T2 Pumping Station, near the border line with Iraq. The SAA and its allies managed to repel the attack after brining reinforcements from the T2.
According to Syrian pro-government activists, two ISIS terrorists were killed during the attack. The activists claimed that the terrorists attack al-Sawab just to seize supplies.
The attack on al-Sawab was ISIS’s largest operation in central Syria in a while. The terrorist group’s cells in the region remained inactive for most of February as a result of intense Russian airstrikes and a series of combing operations by the SAA and its allies.
Currently, the SAA and its allies are working to improve security along the border line with Iraq. On March 3, Liwa Fatemiyoun, an Iranian-backed Afghan group, deployed fresh reinforcements in the area of Hamimah in the eastern Homs countryside. The area is located to the north of al-Sawab.
ISIS cells’ decision to attack al-Sawab during a sand storm indicate that their movements in central Syria are not as free as before. Their attempt to capture supplies also indicates that they are being depleted. The end of the terrorist group’s insurgency in the region may be near.
