ISIS Cells Target Three Armored Vehicles In Egypt’s Sinai

On April 18 morning, ISIS cells in the Sinai Peninsula attacked a convoy of the Egyptian military in the region’s northern part.

Local sources told the UK-based New Arab that the convoy, which consisted of several Humvee armored vehicles, was targeted with improvised explosive devices (IEDs) near the town of Tufaha, south of Bir al-Abd city.

ISIS confirmed its responsibility for the attack in a statement released by its news agency, Amaq. The terrorist group claimed that two Humvees were destroyed and several Egyptian service members were killed. The New Arab’s sources confirmed these claims.

“The [IEDs’] explosion caused significant material damage to the military vehicles, while ambulances transported the bodies of the victims,” the New Arab quoted its sources as saying.

A day earlier, a similar IED attack targeted a Humvee of the Egyptian military near the historical town of Qasrawet, west of Bir al-Abd. According to Amaq, the vehicle was damaged and several soldiers were injured.

ISIS cells in Sinai intensified their attacks on government forces in recent weeks. These attacks were likely a response to recent security operations, which inflicted heavy losses on the terrorist group’s remnants in the region.
