On August 20, ISIS claimed responsibility for the recent attack on Russian troops in the eastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor.
The attack, which took place on August 18, killed Maj. Gen. Vyacheslav Gladkih and injured two other Russian service members.
In a statement released by its news agency, Amaq, ISIS claimed that a number of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which had been planted by its terrorists east of the town of al-Sukhnah in eastern Homs, had struck a Russian patrol that was combing the region.
The Russian military said previously that the attack had taken place near the al-Taim oil field, which is indeed located to the east of al-Sukhnah, in the western Deir Ezzor countryside.
ISIS claimed that other IEDs planted in the same area had struck a vehicle carrying Mohamad al-Daher, the commander of the Syrian National Defense Forces in Deir Ezzor. Al-Daher was killed along with a number of his bodyguards.
Hundreds of ISIS terrorists are hiding in the Homs desert, which lays between western Deir Ezzor and eastern Homs.
The August 18 attack on Russian troops is a testimony to ISIS’ growing presence in central Syria. The Syrian military and its allies are yet to take decisive actions against the group. This could soon lead to dangerous consequences.

This has been going on, in mostly open desert, for how many years already? First it was said that Homs couldn’t be cleared because the SAA (at least the part that can actually fight) was needed for the big push in Idlib–which never materialized. Is someone bribing SAA to look the other way? Is Russia allowing some low-level mayhem as a means of pressuring Assad? That then didn’t work out so well for them this time.
Or is the key factor that these goons can find shelter and other support near al-Tanf? You know, the US base that was declared “irrelevant” when the SAA moved around it in their eastward push? Then you once again underestimated the Americans and their determination to get you killed.

What is find baffling based on a lifetime in intel and operational planning is how in the heck in this era of ELINT, drones and satellites, these alCIAda cunts can roam around in armed Toyota hilux pickups brazenly in braod daylight without instantly inviting a air attack. Turkey, which on paper has an inferior military to Russia, but far bigger balls, has totally dominated Libya with just drones. Not a single Turkish airstrike using F-16 has taken place in Libya, which is 1400 kms from Turkish soil. Idlib and Homs are barely a fraction of the land mass of Libya and barely 5 minutes scramble time from Russian coastal bases in Tartus and Latakia, but for some reason these terrorist cunts are not hit?
