ISIS Claims Its Cells Attacked U.S.-Led Coalition Convoy In Syria’s Deir Ezzor

On November 12, ISIS claimed via its official news agency, Amaq, that its cells in the northeastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor had attacked a joint convoy of the United States-led coalition and its proxy, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

According to Amaq, the convoy was ambushed in the town of Diban in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside on November 9. The news agency said that several vehicles of the convoy were damaged during the ambush, but didn’t report any casualties.

Diban is located right next to al-Omar oil fields where the U.S.-led coalition maintains a large base, known as the Green Village.

Between November 8 and 9, local sources in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside reported unusual movements by the coalition and the SDF in Diban and its outskirts. A search operation was reportedly conducted in the town.

The U.S.-led coalition and the SDF are yet to comment on ISIS’s alleged attack. The terrorist group made similar claims about attacking coalition troops in northeastern Syria on more than one occasion this year. Most of these claims were false.

ISIS cells in northeastern Syria are still very active, especially in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor. However, the terrorist group rarely attacks the U.S.-led coalition. Most of its attacks target either civilians or SDF personnel.

The U.S.-led coalition has been using the war on ISIS as an excuse to keep operating in northeastern Syria, where its forces occupy rich gas and oil fields.
