ISIS branch in Afghanistan, ISIS-Khorasan Province (ISIS-K), has claimed responsibility for the October 15 Kandahar city bombing which targeted Shiite worshippers at the Imam Bargah mosque.
In a statement released by its news agency, Amaq, the terrorist group said that the attack was carried out by two suicide bombers “Anas al-Khorasani” and “Abu Ali al-Blushi”. According to Amaq, the two bombers blew up their suicide belts amid the Shiite worshippers inside the mosque after bypassing the Taliban’s security measures and killing the mosque’s guards.
ISIS-K mocked the Taliban for not revealing the death toll from the attack. Afghan sources said that between 30 and 60 people were killed. Dozens others were wounded.

Zabiullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban and Deputy Minister of Information and Culture in the group’s Interim Government, condemned the attack and said that work is underway to arrest the perpetrators.
Exactly a week earlier, more than 50 Shiite worshippers of the Persian-speaking Hazaras minority were killed when a suicide bomber of ISIS-K blew himself up in Gozar-e-Sayed Abad Mosque in Kunduz city.
ISIS-K repeated attacks on Shiites mosques raises some serious questions about the measures the Taliban is supposedly taking to protect the minority. The group’s new regime will have to prove that it has the will and the ability to protect all Afghans before seeking international recognition.
