ISIS’ main news agency, Amaq, claimed on June 14 that the terrrosit group’s cells had killed eleven fighters of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in a series of improvised-explosive device (IED) explosions in the northern city of Raqqa.
According to Amaq, the first and second explosions targeted vehicles of the SDF in the districts of al-Firdaws and al-Rashid. The third one, however, targeted a gathering of SDF fighters, who were on their way to the scene of the second explosion.
Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently, a Syrian blog with strong local connections, confirmed that three IEDs exploded inside Raqqa’s city center in the last hours of June 13. However, the blog said that the explosions injured and killed several civilians, not only SDF personnel.
The SDF’s security forces in Raqqa ignored the attacks, which occurred few hours after a joint security operation by the group and its main backer, the US-led coalition.
ISIS’ ability to carry out such coordinated attacks in the heart of the SDF-held areas is an example of the terrorist group’s growing influence in northeastern Syria. This threat will not likely go away any time soon.
