ISIS Claims Responsibility For Syria Gas Pipeline Attack (Photos)

ISIS has officially claimed responsibility for the September 17 attack on the Arab gas pipeline and the electricity grid in southern Syria which will be soon used to transfer gas from Egypt and electricity from Jordan to Lebanon as a part of a US-sponsored initiative.

In a statement released by the Amaq news agency on September 18, the terrorist group said that its cells blew up the pipeline and two electricity towers as a part of the “economic war” it has been waging against its enemies.

The attack led to a complete blackout allover Syria. Nevertheless, electricity was restored within a few hours. The gas pipeline was also fixed.

Ghassan al-Zamil, Syria’s electricity minister, said that local authorities had launched an investigation into the attack. Some of the perpetrators have been already apprehended by Syrian security forces.

The sabotage attack was apparently meant to undermine the US-sponsored initiative that was launched last August to ease the sever power crisis in Lebanon. Syria is set to benefit from the initiative. Some of the sanctions imposed on the country will reportedly be eased.

ISIS cells have been carrying out similar sabotage attacks against the electricity grid and oil infrastructure in Iraq for a few months now.
