On January 29, fighters of the ISIS-affiliated terrorist group Boko Haram attacked a position of the Nigerian Army on the Nigerian-Niger border, according a report released by the ISIS-linked news agency Amaq on January 31. The source claimed that Boko Haram fighters killed fifteen soldiers and captured ten vehicles of the army during the cross border attack.
The attack was likely conducted by the Abu-Musab al-Barnawi branch of Boko Haram, as Amaq report only the attacks that were carried out by this branch. Abu-Musab al-Barnawi has been considered “al-Baghdadi’s man in Nigeria” since early 2016 when he was appointed by al-Baghdadi as the leader of Boko Haram. This moove led to an internal conflict within the terrorist group.
In a related development, Public Relations Director of the Nigerian Army Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman announced in an official statement that units of the Nigerian Army cleared camp Zario area in the Northeastern Borno State from Boko Haram fighters on January 30.
During the operation, the Nigerian Army recovered a Vickers Mk 3 Eagle main battle tank and a Panhard VBL armored vehicle from Boko Haram. Moreover, the army destroyed twenty-two vehicles of Boko Haram, according to Gen. Usman’s statement.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) announced on January 29 that one of its Chinese-made CH-3 Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) had discovered and destroyed an artillery piece and several vehicles of Boko Harm in the Sambisa forest of Brono State.
So far the Nigerian Army efforts have been successful in containing Boko Haram within a small area in the northeast of the country. However, the lack of border security around Nigeria allows the terrorist group maintain few supply lines there.
