An ISIS member blew himself up on June 29 among a unit of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) security forces that had raided his house in the town of Sarmin, southeast of Idlib’s city center.
HTS’ news network, Iba’a, confirmed the indecent. However, the network claimed that no one was killed or injured in the explosion.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), Sarmin’s raid was a part of a large-scale operation against the remaining ISIS cells in Idlib that was launched by HTS in the early hours of June 29.
The security situation in Idlib deteriorated over the last few weeks. The governorate was rocked by several attacks. In the last two days only, a commander of Jaysh al-Ahrar, a Turkish-backed faction allied to HTS, was killed and another was injured in IED explosions.
HTS carried out several similar security operations over the last few months. However, ISIS influence in Greater Idlib is still strong, likely due the ideological similarities between the supporters of ISIS and so-called “moderate rebels” of Idlib.
