On August 29, an IED, which had been planted by ISIS fighters, struck a Humvee armored vehicle of the Afghan National Police (ANP) in the district of Momand Dara in the eastern province of Nangarhar. Minutes later, a second IED exploded when a unit of the ANP approached the attack site to inspect it.

According to the ISIS-liked news agency Amaq, five personnel of the ANP were killed and five others were injured as result of the double tap attack.

Attaullah Khogyani, a spokesman for Nangarhar’ governor, confirmed to the TOLO TV that five policemen were killed when a “mine” stuck their vehicle in Momand Dara. According to the Afghan TV channel, the area witnessed several hit and run attacks by ISIS during the last few months.

Nangarhar is considered the main stronghold of ISIS in Afghanistan. Last week, the head of terrorist group “Abu Sayed Orakzai” was assassinated in a U.S. airstrike on his hideout in the province. Observers believe that the Afghan government and the NATO should take more similar steps to secure the eastern province, before it is too late.
