An official of the so-called ‘health department’ of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group has been killed in an airstrike on the southwest of the Iraqi city of Kirkuk.
An official of the so-called ‘health department’ of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, as well as four ordinary members of the group, were killed in an airstrike on the southwest of Kirkuk city, the Iraqi Alsumaria News TV-network reported on Thursday, citing an unnamed source. Reportedly, the airstrike targeted a position of the IS in al-Qadisiya neighborhood in central Hawija.
Areas in the southwest of Kirkuk, most notably the town of Hawija, are still being held by the IS, which took control of large areas of Iraq in 2014. These areas are still awaiting military campaigns, similar to the current operation of the Iraqi forces and the US-led coalition in Mosul.
On Thursday, Ahmed al-Assadi, a spokesman for al-Hashd al-Shaabi, also known as the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), said during a press conference that the leaderships of the PMU expressed a preference to give priority to liberation of Hawija town, but the government decided to start with the recapture of Mosul.
According to reports, residents of Hawija and other areas, which are under control of the IS, suffer from stinging shortages of livelihood and supplies, as well as from human rights violations, carried out by the terrorist group. At least 160,000 people have been forced to leave areas of Iraq, occupied by the IS, and move to refugee camps.
