On January 28, ISIS news agency Amaq released a video showing an attack on a vehicle of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northeastern Syria.
ISIS cells targeted the vehicle, a pick-up, with an improvised explosive device (IED) as it was passing west of the town of al-Shaddadi in the southern countryside of al-Hasakah. Amaq said several SDF fighters who were aboard the vehicle were injured.
Two other vehicles of the SDF were targeted by ISIS cells with IEDs near the towns of al-Jarkah and Hamrat Balassim in the eastern Raqqa countryside on January 26 and 27.
ISIS cells are once again stepping up their attacks in the SDF-held part of northeastern Syria. The Kurdish-led group and its main backer, the US-led coalition, are yet to react.
A recent report by the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human revealed that ISIS cells were behind 43 attacks in northeastern Syria between January 1 and 24. The attacks claimed the lives of 18 SDF fighters and 13 civilians.
ISIS takes advantage of the current tensions in northeastern Syria and seek to expand its influence in the region. The terrorist group’s cells are mainly active in Arab-majority areas like southern al-Hasakah, Raqqa and southeastern Deir Ezzor.
