On July 27, ISIS announced that its terrorists has attacked a checkpoint of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on a road leading to al-Hawl camp in the eastern countryside of Syria’s al-Hasakah.
During the attack, which took place a day earlier, ISIS terrorists opened fire at the checkpoint and a military vehicle that was parked nearby. Before fleeing, the terrorists targeted a second military vehicle that came to support the checkpoint personnel.
ISIS’s official news agency, Amaq, claimed that at least ten fighters of the SDF were killed or wounded as a result of the attack.
More than 60,000 people, including thousands of foreigners, are being held at al-Hawl. Many of the camp’s residents are relatives of ISIS terrorists, or suspected members of the group. The SDF has been struggling to maintain order in the camp where ISIS influence remains strong. According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 27 people have been murdered inside the camp since the beginning of the year. ISIS supporters, especially women, were reportedly behind most of the crimes.
The fact that ISIS cells were able to carry out such a complex attack near al-Hawl is worrying to say the least. The attack highlights serious flaws in the SDF’s security measures around the camp.
ISIS could be planning to storm al-Hawl to free some of its members and their families. Last January, the terrorist group’s cells launched a large attack on a prison run by the SDF near the city of al-Hasakah. Hundreds of terrorists escaped from the prison as a result of the attack. Many of them are still missing to this day. The attack claimed the lives of more than 300 people and wounded many others.
We need a cull of dangerous people who attack innocents.
