On October 24, ISIS’ news agency Amaq shared several photos of a recent attack in the Kurdistan region in northern Iraq.
ISIS claimed that the attack, which took place on October 17, targeted a Peshmerga unit in Shwan, northeast of Kirkuk. During the attack, ISIS terrorists damaged a pick-up truck with machine guns.
Amaq claimed that three Kurdish Iraqi soldiers were killed in the ambush. Nevertheless, two of the three bodies seen in the agency’s photos were wearing civilian clothes.

Kurdish forces confirmed after the release of the photos that the terrorist attack targeted three civilians from a single family, two brothers and their cousin.
ISIS cells are present in the Kurdistan Region. On August 21, Kurdish security arrested a terrorist running a sleeper cell of the group in a raid near the region’s capital, Erbil.
Despite the limited presence of ISIS, Kurdistan is considered among Iraq’s safest region. The country’s western region is, however, witnessing increasing attacks by the terrorist group.
