On March 4, ISIS’ weekly newspaper, al-Nabaa, released an infographic summarizing the terrorist group’s recent operations in the African region of Sahel.
The Sahel part of Africa includes from west to east parts of northern Senegal, southern Mauritania, central Mali, northern Burkina Faso, the extreme south of Algeria, Niger, the extreme north of Nigeria, the extreme north of Cameroon and Central African Republic, central Chad, central and southern Sudan, the extreme north of South Sudan, Eritrea and the extreme north of Ethiopia.
According to al-Nabaa’s infographic, the terrorist group carried out a total of eleven operations in Sahel in the last four months.
The operations included five hit-and-run attacks, five ambushes and an assassination. Seven of the operations took place in Niger, three were in Mali and one was in Burkina Faso.
ISIS claims that its operations in Sahel killed or wounded:
- 151 Nigerian soldiers and pro-government fighters;
- 26 al-Qaeda militants;
- Ten Malian soldiers;
- Seven Burkinabè policemen.
The terrorists also captured 100 assault rifles, two pickup trucks and 24 motorcycles in the course of their recent operations.
ISIS stepped up its activities in Africa following the collapse of its “caliphate” in the Levant. The terrorist group has been active in Sahel for several years now. Despite pressure from local African forces, the group’s influence in the region will not likely end soon.
And their goal is?
I mean other than being used as destabilization tools in favor of Turkey or the USA…
