An ISIS shelling has killed Russia’s Lieutenant General Valery Asapov near Deir Ezzor city, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday.
According to the ministry, the general died after sustaining a “fatal injury” in the “sudden Daesh [ISIS] mortar shelling.” The incident took place when Asapov was at a command outpost manned by Syrian troops, assisting commanders in the liberation of Deir Ezzor.
The killed general will receive a state award posthumously.
According to the Russian media, Asapov was a commander of Russian task forces in Deir Ezzor and Raqqah provinces.
Earlier in September, the Syrian Arab Army, supported by the Russian military, broke the ISIS siege on Deir Ezzor city and Dier Ezzor Airport and launched a large-scale against ISIS in the countryside of the city.
My condolences to the Russian Military. I’ve been thinking about that. I’m as angry as anyone who’s watching this war. It is palpably unfair, with the US clandestinely weighing in on the side of ISIS (or the other way around). However, Russia is a relatively small dog, and does not want to trigger war with the big dog either. It will be interesting to see how the Russians react. They have been clever and diplomatic, and decisive when they need to be. I believe the Russians are better strategists than the US and are unlikely to overreact. And, as noted above, the odd general is supposed to die in wars.
Your sentiments same as mine. Russians could come in and lay waste in an instant, as we saw a glimpse of with the insane attempt to capture Russian military police in Hama, but unlike the United States culture they have long term goals in mind they do not want to scuttle for a brief moment of ‘shock and awe’.

This was probably a GPS guided artillery shell. It is the latest US technology. There was a Sixty Minutes segment on it a few months ago. It probably has range of 22 miles. It could have come from one of those special forces outposts discovered by Russia.

Difficult to say what it really was. I have noticed from various reports that most Russian ground casualties in Syria were to be traced back to those pesky mortars.
They are cheap, easy to operate and more importantly can fire from behind fortified potion or hills without exposing its crew to direct enemy fire. The question is indeed, whether ISIS just had a random ,lucky hit or whether they were being feed intelligence through various back channels. I tend to think the latter is the most likely cause with CIA ground operators supplying the info the jihadist in real time.
Much like the SF community here, at this point I am eagerly waiting for an adequate Russian support. After all, they have lost one of their more experienced front line commanders. So no business as usual anymore vis-a-vis the US troops in Syria ( or elsewhere for that matter)
