On October 1, ISIS cells in Syria’s central region attacked a position of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

The London-based monitoring group said that the terrorists fired several rocket-propelled grenades at the position, which is located near the town of al-Sholah in the western Deir Ezzor countryside, during troops rotation. The attack claimed the life of a single soldier.

Al-Sholah is located on a strategic highway linking Deir Ezzor with Homs. ISIS cells increased attacks on the highway in recent weeks.

The terrorists attacked a group of shepherds near al-Sholah on September 9. Six shepherds were killed and two others were wounded during the attack. The terrorists mutilated the bodies of the victimes, burned their vehicles, and looted some of the sheep.

According to the SOHR, ISIS cells in the central region have carried out 120 attacks since the start of the year. The attacks claimed the lives of 270 Syrian soldiers and pro-government fighters. 160 civilians, most of whom were shepherds and truffle hunters, were also killed in the terrorist group’s attacks.

Government forces and their allies launched several operations against ISIS cells in the central region this year. Despite these efforts, the terrorist group’s insurgency is still ongoing. The terrorists are likely receiving support from their comrades in the northeastern region and the southeastern area of al-Tanf, which are controlled by the United States-led coalition and its proxies.
