ISIS claims that its terrorists had repelled a large-scale attack by the Nigerian Armed Forces on their hangouts in the northeastern state of Borno.
The attack, which took place on October 15, targeted hideouts in the village of Duska, near the town of Brati. The terrorists repelled the attack following heavy clashes. According to the Amaq news agency, government troops were forced to retreat.
ISIS claimed that at least 30 Nigerian soldiers were killed and many others were injured during the clashes. The terrorists also captured five pick-up trucks, two armored personnel carriers and loads of weapons.
The terrorists, who maintain a fairly large presence in the area numbering Lake Chad, intensified their attacks on civilian settlements recently.
On October 12, ISIS terrorists slaughtered 14 civilians who were working in their farmlands near the town of Ngwom. On October 15, a similar attack targeted the town of Kuji. At least six locals were killed. Amaq shared photos of the attack.

On October 16, ISIS terrorists targeted a military vehicle of government forces near the town of Dambu, killing and injuring a number of soldiers.
Nigerian government forces are failing to counter the growing threat of ISIS in Borno. The loose border near Lake Chad is enabling the terrorists.

The biggest problem with Boko Haram, part of which became ISIS, is that it is actually rooted in the area. It’s not an imposed import of foreign mercenaries like ISIS in Syria and Iraq. The Boko Haramis are the fathers, brothers and sons of the local people. Just like India has been unable to crush the Kashmir insurgency despite oppressing the state for thirty years, Nigeria can’t root out Boko Haram by pure military means. It’s not possible without giving attention to the reasons the movement arose in the first place. Until the Nigerian government stops reacting as though Boko Haram is Biafra II, it’s not going to succeed. In fact all it has achieved is drive the Abubakar Shekau faction of Boko Haram into the waiting arms of ISIS.
