ISIS cells in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, which is held by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), are once again stepping up their attacks.
On August 3, the terrorist group announced that its cells had carried out two attacks against the SDF in district of al-Busayrah.
The first attack took place near the village of Briyha and targeted a vehicle of the SDF. ISIS terrorists opened fire at the vehicle, killing two SDF fighters and wounding two others, according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The second attack saw ISIS terrorists ambushing two fighters of the SDF who were traveling on a motorcycle near the village of al-Sabhah. The terrorist group’s news agency, Amaq, said that both fighters were killed. The agency also shared a photo showing an assault rifle and a handgun which were captured during the attack.
The US-led coalition maintains two large bases at al-Omar oil fields and the Conoco gas plants, which are located a few kilometers to the north of al-Busayrah. However, it didn’t intervene to hunt down the terrorists after the attacks.
ISIS’s recent attacks in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor are worrying to say the least. The attacks came amid tensions between the Kurdish-led SDF and the local Arab population in the area. Several protests against the SDF were organized in the area recently and clashes were reported on more than one occasion. The terrorist group is clearly trying to take advantage of these ethnic tensions.
