On August 21, four Iranian-backed fighters were ambushed and killed by ISIS terrorists in Syria’s central region, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
The London-based monitoring group said that the fighters fell into the deadly ambush while taking part in a combing operation in the outskirts of the ancient city of Palmyra in the eastern countryside of Homs. Only one of the four fighters was reportedly a Syrian citizen. The nationalities of the other three casualties remain unknown.
ISIS’s official news agency, Amaq, is yet to confirm the attack. It’s worth noting that ISIS’s top leader in central Syria warned in a recent interview with the al-Nabaa newspaper that many reports about attacks by the terrorist group’s cells in the region are false, noting that group announces its attacks via Amaq only.
If confirmed, this would be ISIS’s second deadly attack in central Syria in less than a week. On August 16, the terrorist group’s cells killed a soldier of the Syrian Arab Army to the west of al-Tabqah Air Base in the southern countryside of Raqqa.
In the last few months, Syrian government forces and their allies stepped up their operations in central Syria which forced ISIS cells to tune down their attacks. Many of the group’s terrorists are currently laying low in remote parts of the region.
