On April 5, ISIS’ news agency, Amaq, shared photos of a recent attack by the group in the southeastern Nigerian region of Diffa.

The attack, which took place on April 4, targeted a base of the FAN [Forces Armées Nigériennes – reads in English the Niger Armed Forces] in the town of Ngagam, which is located near the city center of the Diffa Region.

In the course of the attack, ISIS terrorists stormed the base and killed five Nigerien soldiers. The terrorists also seized six pickup trucks and loads of weapons.

Moreover, ISIS terrorists targeted FAN reinforcements with an improvised explosive device. As a result, an armored vehicle was destroyed and six other soldiers were allegedly killed.

The terrorist attack in Ngagam was not a surprise. The Diffa Region borders Lake Chad and the northeastern Nigerian State of Borno, where ISIS cells have been active for several years.

ISIS has been fighting to expand its influence around Lake Chad for a few years now. The lack of proper coordination between Niger and Nigeria is benefiting the terrorist group, which appears to be stepping up its activities on both sides of the border.
