Iraq’s city of Basra was rocked by a large explosion on December 7th. According to Iraqi military, at least four people were killed and four others were injured as a result of the incident.

A motorcycle rigged with explosives was the cause of the blast which resulted in a lare fire. Iraq’s Security Media Cell reported that the four victims were in two cars caught by the fire. The explosion took place opposite al-Jumhouri Hospital in the city centre by the al-Samoud intersection.

“Forensic experts and specialised technical teams are still present at the scene of the accident to determine its nature and give more details about the nature of the accident,” said Saad Maan, the head of the Security Media Cell, in a statement.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. However, ISIS terrorists are the main suspects.

If confirmed, these would be yet another incident in a series of ISIS attacks that have taken place in recent days in Iraq.

On December 2, ISIS terrorists ambushed a unit of the Peshmerga, the Kurdish branch of the Iraqi Armed Forces, and assaulted several civilian houses in the village of Khadir Jijah in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. The terrorists killed nine personnel of the Peshmerga and wounded five others. Three civilians were also killed, while another sustained injures.

On December 5, four Peshmerga members were killed and five others were wounded as a result of ISIS attack in the Altun Kupri area. ISIS fighters attacked a checkpoint near the village of Kara Salim. The terrorists even managed to take control over the village of Al-Lahafan in Kirkuk province. The gained territory was reportedly liberated by the Iraqi Army and Kurdish fighters the next day. However, important material damage was caused to the local farm properties.

Since December 5, the Iraqi Army and Peshmerga forces have launched several joint operations against ISIS in Iraqi Kurdistan. A  series of raids in response to recent ISIS attacks were carried out. The Iraqi Army is also actively fighting terrorists in other regions. For example, on December 6, six ISIS members were killed in airstrike north of the Kilo 160 area. However, all these efforts lead to little result.

During the large-scale operations against ISIS, Iraqi Kurdistan remained one of the safest regions of Iraq. Nonetheless, now, when the vestiges of ISIS are focused on guerrilla warfare, the leadership of the Kurdish autonomous region seems to be unable to fully guarantee security there.

Today, the explosion in Basra likely marked the spread of ISIS activities in the oil-rich southern Iraqi regions as well.

Of course “ISIS” is growing. It needs to grow to give its Amerikastani owners an excuse to keep occupying Iraq.
