Islamist rebels fight back, launch counter-offensive in eastern Damascus

AlMasdarNews reports: Around noon yesterday, Jaish al-Islam mobilized its assault troops and attacked Syrian Arab Army (SAA) positions east of Douma to counteract weeks of ongoing government advances in the East Ghouta (Damascus).

Islamist fighters unleashed a barrage of gunfire and artillery attacks on SAA troops stationed at the Adra’ Prison Complex and subsequently attempted to infiltrate the area.

According to a military source close to Al-Masdar, three SAA soldiers were severely injured during the attack and have been transferred to a nearby field hospital.

Two of them were wounded by mortar shells, while one was struck by a rebel sniper.

However, as Jaish al-Islam pressed the offensive, three of their own fighters were killed by SAA machine gun fire. Furthermore, a 23mm gun vehicle was destroyed an artillery shell.

As clashes waved back and forth up until the early evening hours, Islamist fighters were unable to gain any ground and found themselves fully repelled by the SAA.
