The Israeli Air Force (IAF) carried out a large wave of strikes on dozens of targets in Iran overnight, including the Isfahan nuclear facility and four primed missile launchers, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on June 21.
In a statement, the military said that some 50 fighter jets of the IAF were involved in the wave of strikes, dropping 150 munitions.
The strikes at the Isfahan nuclear site in central Iran, which was targeted on the very first day of Israel’s Operation Rising Lion, were intended to cause further damage to the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program, according to the IDF.
“Within the compound, a centrifuge production facility was also targeted, along with additional military targets of the Iranian regime in the Isfahan area,” the military said, claiming that it had caused “significant damage” to Iran’s centrifuge production capabilities.
The IDF added that four primed ballistic missile launchers were “neutralized” in the same wave of strikes before a salvo was launched at Israel.
Additional strikes overnight hit trucks used to launch drones at Israel, along with ballistic missile storage and launch infrastructure, and Iranian radars and air defense sites, according to the military.
The attack on the Isfahan nuclear site was confirmed by Iran’s Fars news agency reports, which said that there was no leakage of hazardous materials. Later, the IDF released drone footage showing extensive damage at the site, with multiple destroyed warehouses.
Separately, the IDF announced the assassination of three senior commanders of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) over the past day.
The first commander, Saeed Izadi, was the head of the Palestine Corps in the IRGC Quds Force. The IDF alleged that he was involved in providing support to the Hamas Movement in the Gaza Strip. Another commander, Behnam Shahriyari, was also a member of the Quds Force. According to the military, he headed Unit 190, which is responsible for the transfer of weapons to Iran’s allies, especially Lebanon’s Hezbollah, Palestinian groups in Gaza, and the Houthis in Yemen.
The last commander, Aminpour Joudaki, was responsible for the 2nd UAV [Unmanned Aerial Vehicle] Regiment of the IRGC Aerospace Force, and “assumed a key role” in the drone unit following the elimination of the unit’s commander, Mohammad-Bagher Taherpour, on June 13, the IDF said.
Additionally, Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency reported on June 21 that nuclear scientist, Isar Tabatabai-Qamsheh and his wife were killed in an Israeli strike in the capital, Tehran, two days earlier. The IDF has not commented on the report yet.
Israeli strikes on the Islamic Republic have so far claimed the lives of at least 430 people and injured 3,500 others, according to Iranian media.
The last wave of strikes shows that Israel is determined to go on with its attack on Iran. This will likely push the Islamic Republic to escalate its retaliatory attacks, which has so far claimed the lives of at least 24 Israelis.
